Coping with contractions
Coping with contractions

Every woman is different. During labor, the experience is unique from one woman to another. The common denominator, though, is the pain felt during labor and delivery.

It is no surprise that many pregnant women now prepare themselves for labor through meditation, prenatal yoga and even light exercise. When true labor sets in, the body is now more prepared and conditioned to handle it.

Still, the extreme discomfort that comes with labor is undeniably unforgettable. How can you actually cope with the pain?

Focus and think positive
Think of labor as something positive. Without labor, your body won’t be able to push your baby out of your womb. As you focus on positive thoughts, now is the best time to apply what you learned from meditation and yoga.

Don’t fight your contractions
Don’t mentally go against your contractions! Remember that although extremely painful, childbirth is one of the most natural phenomena in human experience. Rather than going against your contractions, try embracing them. Relax, welcome the pain, and breathe deeply.

Rest while you can
Yes, it is easier said than done, especially when the intervals between contractions shorten. Instead of worrying about the next contraction, take advantage of this short window by performing deep breathing exercises, or asking your partner to give you back rubs.

Labor is not called as such for nothing. It is an exhausting and draining process, but remember that it will be all worth it once you finally deliver and hold your baby in your arms.
