Is thrush harmful in pregnancy?

Candidiasis, more commonly known as thrush, is a fairly common infection among women. In fact, you get a higher risk of having thrush when you are pregnant due to the many hormonal changes occurring in your body. However, if you suspect you have thrush, it is best to let your doctor or midwife know to properly diagnose the infection.

How exactly can you tell if you have thrush during pregnancy, when the cervical fluid is normally thick and milky? In thrush, discharges become thicker and develop a consistency similar to cottage cheese. It may not smell, but it does make intercourse painful.

Your doctor or midwife will usually perform a pelvic exam and swab test to confirm thrush, then prescribe antifungal suppositories that are safe for pregnancy. Don't worry - symptoms will usually resolve in a week or two.
