Symphysis pubis dysfunction

Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) is a condition characterized by excessive movement of the midline cartilaginous joint, called symphysis pubis, which joins the pubic bones. The main cause of the SPD is the hormone relaxin, which stretches your ligaments to aid your baby during childbirth.

Symptoms of the SPD include pain in the front pelvic region, lower back and hips. A clicking sound may also be heard upon walking.

To treat SPD:
- practice Kegels exercises and pelvic tilts to strengthen your perineal and pelvic muscles;
- wear a pelvic support belt to help position the pelvic bones in place;
- avoid heavy pushing and lifting;
- shift positions slowly.
