Yogurt is tasty, affordable and nutritious - making it the perfect pregnancy snack. It is common choice especially during the first trimester, when morning sickness is at its peak.
Is it safe?
As with other dairy products, if it is labeled as pasteurized, then it is perfectly
safe to eat. Pasteurization destroys bacteria that may be very harmful to your baby.
How healthy is it?
Yogurt is a good source of gut-friendly probiotics. Your baby needs calcium to build
strong bones. Yogurt is particularly rich in calcium to help prevent osteoporosis.
Women are more prone to get osteoporosis later on. A lack in calcium coupled with
hormonal changes makes the bones fragile and brittle. Pregnant women are actually at
risk of osteoporosis, as the baby gets all the calcium from the mother, depleting
her own stores.
How much should you eat?
Nutrition experts encourage taking around three small tubs of yogurt a day.
