Round ligament pain
Round ligament pain

It is not unusual to feel pain at one or both sides of your abdomen or hip areas. The pain may even extend to the back or groin.

This sharp, sudden pain is caused by the round ligament, the structure that supports your uterus within the pelvic area. As your uterus grows during pregnancy, the round ligament stretches, that's why you feel pain. You feel this most when you sneeze or cough, and when you make sudden movements like quickly standing up.

Ways to help relieve the pain:
• Lie down and get enough rest
• Change positions slowly
• Don’t make sudden movements
• Wear a special prenatal bandage

But don’t worry - round ligament pain is normal during pregnancy.
