Tooth care for pregnant moms

Hormonal changes during pregnancy may make your gums swell and trap food debris. It does not take much to prevent tooth problems, especially when unnecessary dental work is generally postponed until you give birth.

Doctors recommend regular brushing of teeth at least two times a day using fluoride toothpaste. Daily flossing should also be practiced. If you suffer from morning sickness, rinsing with water or an alcohol-free mouthwash may help.

If emergency dental work like root canal or tooth extraction is called for, local anesthesia is administered in the smallest amount possible. After the procedure, pregnancy-safe antibiotics are prescribed as well as pain relievers.

If dental work is required to reduce the chance of infection, the second trimester is usually the best time to do it. In your third trimester it might be very tricky to lay on your back.
