The mask of pregnancy
The mask of pregnancy

Ever noticed those dark patches of skin on your cheeks, nose and forehead? Affecting more than half of pregnant mothers, this is a normal sign called chloasma or “mask of pregnancy”.

The cause? Estrogen!
Estrogen levels rise this week which causes hyperpigmentation. So along with chloasma, the appearance of stretch marks and the dark vertical line along your abdomen called linea nigra may start to develop.

How is it treated?
Unfortunately, there is no foolproof way that makes chloasma disappear. Try concealing it instead by applying a gentle concealer or foundation. You should also wear sunscreen because sun exposure darkens the pigmentation.

Chloasma may be physically bothersome, but it normally disappears after you give birth.
