As you reach the halfway mark of your pregnancy, you may find that sleeping becomes more uncomfortable.
Sleeping on your back can be particularly uncomfortable because your baby is pressing into your backbone, while your uterus may also press on your artery and restrict blood flow. Similarly, sleeping on your stomach may feel like sleeping on a ball that's growing. If you sleep on your right side, your liver may be squeezed, causing discomfort.
Instead, try sleeping on your left side. This position will reduce pressure on your artery and keep pressure off your stomach and liver, allowing you to sleep more comfortably. Sleeping on your left side is actually considered the best position as it allows for maximum blood flow. In fact, when you go into early labor, nurses will often place you in a left-side lying position to help you feel more comfortable.
You may also find it helpful to sleep with extra pillows. Place one between your legs, one behind your back, and one under your belly. There are even pillows specially designed for pregnant women that can provide additional support and comfort.
