At week 40, your baby is still curled up into what is called the “fetal position”. Though your baby looks a bit cramped up inside your womb, this is actually the safest and most comfortable place your baby knows.
If you do give birth at week 40 (your baby has already reached term, by the way!), you may notice that your little sweetheart will still assume the fetal position most of the time, though the arms and legs will flail when startled.
Remember that your baby has spent nine comfortable months in your womb, so it will obviously take a while for your little one to fully adjust to extra-uterine life. It will take weeks and even months for your baby to fully realize that there’s actually a lot of room to spread out.
Take advantage of this time by swaddling your baby. Simply wrap up your baby snugly in a warm blanket, and you will notice he or she will immediately feel calm and relaxed. This warm, snug feeling is a reminder of what it feels like in your womb.
