Options for breech babies

Babies normally present breech, or feet-first or bottom-first, during early and mid-pregnancy. They will turn cephalic, or head-first, at about the 36th week to prepare for labor and delivery.

What happens if your baby remains breech until labor? Your obstetrician may recommend a cesarean section as the best option. A vaginal delivery may only be possible if the baby is not in distress and is presenting frank-breech, or bottom-first with the legs straight up the front.

If your obstetrician anticipates a breech presentation, attempts to turn your baby head-first can be made during the 32nd week like gentle pushing. However, if vaginal delivery is not possible, find comfort in knowing that a cesarean section is also relatively safe.
