Can babies cry in the womb?

Babies normally cry the moment they are delivered. Is this something they learn instantly upon the first breath of life, or have they actually been crying (silently!) inside the womb?

It may amaze you, but yes, unborn babies do silently cry in their mothers’ wombs. This interesting behavior may start as early as in the 28th week of pregnancy. It is an attempt made by your baby to express displeasure.

Crying in the womb does not occur on its own, it is a response to the noise, stress, and other things that happen outside the womb.

The silent crying behaviours in an unborn baby are:
- opening the mouth with tongue movements;
- short irregular breathings;
- settling back again.
