At week 16, your baby’s lungs are continuing to develop to be able to function normally for life. As your baby practices breathing-like movements, the lungs simply inhale and exhale amniotic fluid, not oxygen.
Remember that your baby gets the oxygen and other nutrients from you through the umbilical cord and placenta. Think of the breathing-like movements as your baby’s practice sessions for the first breath of life.
Your baby’s heart, meanwhile, is still quite small, but working really well! Within such a tiny human being, the small heart can pump approximately 25 quarts a day - nonstop!
Your baby’s skin is still very thin and almost translucent at week 16. If you could look at your baby now, you can actually see the very small and fragile blood vessels under the skin.
