Formation of vocal cords
Formation of vocal cords

At week 13, your baby is busy developing the structures that will be used to say the first words. Yes, the vocal cords are forming this week, and they are developing fast!

Sound is impossible to travel inside the uterus, so you obviously can’t hear anything from your baby yet. Don’t worry about these vocal cords not being used for months, they will be even more developed as your baby learns to cry and speak.

As you wonder how these vocal cords develop, the mouth is becoming more and more developed (many thanks to your baby’s developing nervous and skeletal systems, too). In fact, you may catch your baby thumb sucking at a routine ultrasound scan!
