It is not just the vocal cords that your baby is busy developing; the intestines are also forming at a fast and furious pace! Though they have been growing for the past weeks, they are in for a growth spurt at week 13.
At this week, the intestines are still growing inside a cavity within the umbilical cord, but they will soon permanently migrate to your baby’s abdominal cavity, where they will undergo more development.
Not far along your baby’s abdomen, the umbilical cord is now firmly connected to your placenta, which is also growing bigger. Though the digestive system won’t be able to get some food yet, the placenta and the cord are your baby’s lifelines for nutrition.
