Recognizing contractions
Recognizing contractions

A contraction is a muscular motion of the uterine smooth muscles. The hormone oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions to spontaneously get your baby out during childbirth.

What does a contraction feel like, exactly? First-time mothers may have a hard time recognizing a contraction. Generally, a contraction is like a very strong menstrual cramp, usually happening in waves. You will know when a contraction is happening, as it is a very distinct feeling.

As contractions occur in waves, they generally start in the lower back then travel to the abdomen. The uterus becomes very firm and hard like your forehead. This is always accompanied by pain.

During labor, every contraction will gradually intensify until it peaks, which will subside slowly then go away. This is where patterns, in terms of frequency and duration, become apparent. As labor progresses, the interval in between contractions become shorter until childbirth is complete.
